Take a look at the gentleman to the right of this wall of text. That's the face of the last truly honest senator who, as of last night, has been voted out of office.
This isn't a partisan thing, and it's not about a Republican beating a Democrat. Honestly, last night, finding out that the people of Wisconsin voted out Russ Feingold was like being punched in the stomach. Feingold has always, ALWAYS been the gold standard of what it meant to be a great senator. We used to have Ted Kennedy to stand up for the little people, and then he passed, leaving Feingold as the only remaining senator I can truly say was 100% concerned about the needs of his constituents over himself.
What made Senator Feingold such a badass?
Well, let's talk money. That seems to be everyone's big concern nowadays, so let's begin there. Did you know that Senator Feingold hasn't accepted a single salary raise while in office? OK, how about that he routinely gives back large amounts of his annual budget because he can't justify spending for the sake of spending. How many senators would author and sponsor a bill to reform campaign finance and make elections more fair and equal? I'll give you a clue: not many.
Is the guy smart? You bet he's smart, he's a
Rhodes Scholar, baby. Oh, and he has impeccable judgment. Who was the sole person to vote against impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, knowing that it was all a B.S. sideshow that didn't really matter in the long run? Oh, that was Russ Feingold. Who was the only senator to vote against the U.S. Patriot Act back in 2001? I'll give you a clue -- his name was Russ Feingold. Who voted against the War in Iraq? Feingold. And who was the first one to call for American removal from Iraq once we went in there and messed stuff up? Oh, yeah, Feingold again. And any time a piece of legislation comes up which might infringe your civil liberties, guess who has been there getting pissed off on your behalf and fighting it tooth and nail.
Would you like Universal Health Care? Russ Feingold was huge in pushing it. Want gays to marry? Feingold was so pissed that the Senate Judiciary Committee wanted to ban same-sex marriage that he left in the middle of their meeting. He's even been the keynote speaker at the annual Human Rights Campaign gala.
Of course, no person is without fault. I disagree with some of Feingold's record on weapons control, and his involvement with United States policies in Zimbabwe, but for the most part, I feel like Senator Feingold has been the best representative of sane America in politics. And now he's been voted out.
I know you're somewhere out there, Senator Feingold, fighting the good fight. Keep it up. You're a good man, and you've done all Americans a great service during your years in office.
