Ethical Science, Genetic Modification and Responsible Stewardship

French biologist and philosopher Jean Rostand once wrote, "Science has made us gods even before we are worthy of being men." Anyone who disagrees is welcome to review the relationship between man and science over the last few decades -- it's less than 100 years since we invented the atomic bomb, and even less than that since we rationalized its usage as a weapon.

Regardless of how you look at it, man and science have propelled each other at an unprecedented rate within the last thousand years (a time frame which, given the overall chronology of the world, doesn't mean anything at all). In the time since the world's oldest living tree started to put down roots, we've moved out of our parents' caves, invented all manner of medicine, the concept of social progress and justice, instant communication with far off lands, the technology to reliably save lives from things that would have previously killed us, etc. It's really quite impressive.

What this means, however, is that we're running into ethical issues at a greater rate that we may have previously anticipated. In the decades since Philip K. Dick wrote about man-as-scientist-as-technologist-as-god, we've come to realize that some of his more metaphysical crises about the nature of existence and consciousness are rapidly approaching our doorstep. Case in point, the following TED talk which has been making rounds in some circles:

I suppose the larger point is, as human beings, it is now incumbent upon us to rationally and thoughtfully decide our role in the cycle of life. The last few decades of scientific progress seemed to have been marked by testing our own limits, and simply confronting ethical issues as we essentially create them. There was minor debate over Dolly a few years back, but that died down after the sensationalism did too. Even when Panayiotis Zavos claimed to have reached one of the holy grails of scientific progress, the cloning of a human being, attention died down as soon as the story lost its tabloid sensationalism. The scientific community has kept the debate going to some extent, but my concern becomes that on ethical issues such as these, the debate needs to be larger, and broader.

Now, I'm not necessarily advocating putting it to a poll of the general population. As terrible as it is to say, putting scientific nuances on the plates of people at large sounds like a terrifying prospect. But we do need to collectively start to decide, and define, exactly what our role within ourselves and within nature is. And that is a debate worth taking to the world at large.

From where I'm sitting this morning, I think we have a small number of options.

First, we can assume the role of careful steward and use technology only in ways to bolster and support life as it naturally evolves. I would imagine this role allows for cloning in the interest of species preservation, but may not extend to such things as the active creation of new life forms for personal interests. Does this include tampering with genetics to create desired results (such as hyper-growth crops)? That's a question that may need to be taken on a case by case basis. Everyone can agree that creating bio-agro solutions is a noble and defensible ambition, but do we choose to draw a line when we tamper with obviously sentient creatures? Is bio-engineering a cow to make it tastier (good luck, guys, cows taste fabulous) wrong if it comes at the expense of the animal itself? Do we want to start going down that road, and if so, how far?

Another option would be to approach science in the most strictly rational way possible. Humans evolved to gain dominion over all other creatures, and to that extent, we should be able to use our knowledge and progress to further our own goals. This one is kinda nice in that it's cold, scientific, and maybe a little unfeeling. Do we care that we put sentient brains in a nutritional goop if we can learn from it? Is it cruel, or uncaring, to rewire organisms to fit our needs? This approach would be the most rational, and the simplest, in that everything is fair game. Since we're sledding down the slippery slope at this point anyway, a good question might be: do we extend this policy to humans? This kind of thinking has appeared in the past, and usually has less than admirable results. This also feels like the most inhuman answer; part of our evolution is the cognizance of high level emotion and the concept of right and wrong. To proceed blindly as scientists may logically be correct, but it just doesn't feel right.

Perhaps the right answer is the third one, and the one we've been heading down. Perhaps we wait until issues arise then, and then a small committee of peoples in the know make a decision based on what their experience and emotions tell them. This is how science has operated so far; we push our limits until we discover what they are, and then adjust from there. The only fear there would be that one day we will run into a barrier that we can't come back from... do we take a hard ethical and legal stance on human cloning before it happens, or when the first doctor (such as Zavos) shows up with what they claim is a cloned person. So far we've taken legal measures, but most of them have been too ham-handed (such as the banning of stem cells for research, which is an entirely different blog post) and based on a variety of factors even outside of science. Maybe that's the correct way to decide, via lawsuit, and after the fact. Who knows.

The main point here is that we need to strive for responsible science in every way possible. If that means deciding on our limits beforehand, so be it. I don't think anyone could logically claim that we don't have some degree of responsibility towards nature itself, so deciding what those responsibilities are now, before we violate them, seems like the most responsible thing we can do.

Irish Spring Intensify Body Wash

I almost universally have a hard time finding body wash that I like. Bar soap is OK, but it can get kinda gross if more than one person is ever using it, so body wash is the preferred soap. The problem is, every new body wash I try has some small issue with it.

I had some great Dove stuff... but it had 'moisturizing beads', which just meant that after you got out of the shower, you occasionally found what felt like sand between your toes or clung to your arm. After that it was expensive Avon body wash, but it never really lathered correctly, so you'd have to use an obscene amount of it to actually wash.

The most recent attempt is Irish Spring Intensify, a body wash best represented by this commercial:

For the sake of full disclosure, I should say this -- I've used Irish Spring before in bar form, and it caused me to break out in a rash. I figured that the body wash might be different, so what's the harm in giving it a try?

Well, I should have paid better attention to the commercials and packaging.

The selling point of this soap is the 'intensifying' blast of 'cooling', produced by putting eucalyptus into the wash itself. While this sounds like a nice idea, it's really, really not, and let me tell you what... I don't want anything producing a cold, tingling sensation on my genitals.

At face value, that may not seem too bad if you're inclined towards that sort of thing. But allow me to share what it's actually like -- a snowstorm, specifically in your pants. Your genitals? Suffering from an intense sensation of cold for a decent hour afterwards. Worse, washing your bottom is the most awful part: the eucalyptus has a relatively strong effect on your bottom, giving you the impression that you've crapped your pants and the poop has gone cold. Really.

I'm not sure I'm going to continue using the body wash. It's sorta nice on your chest in a Vicks VapoRub kind of way, but it's more uncomfortable on your sensitives than anything else.

The last few nights, in bed, I seem to have reoccurring thoughts. They're not racing thoughts -- I've had those before, and this isn't it. Instead, I can watch a little TV, read a book, but as soon as I turn everything off and close my eyes, my brain pipes up from the back:

"You know, everything you know and love is going to die one day."

I'm pretty sure normal people don't grapple with this with the same regularity that I do. It started about a week and a half ago, and it's now become a nightly thing. Watch some television, turn off the TV, remember that everything will die (and probably pretty soon). The psychologist in me is always helpful with platitudes like 'If you live every moment as well as you can, you have no reason to dread death', but then the other part of me is like, 'Well yeah, you would say that, since you're going to die'. It's all very distressing.

Part of me wonders if it's because I'm expecting to think about it every night, and so I do. I don't think that's the case, however; over the weekend, I fell asleep watching TV, only to awake at 2 AM out of a cold sleep to remember, oh yeah, everybody dies.

Traditionally, such thoughts are symptoms of two things: suicidal behavior, and stress. I'm about 100% sure I'm not suicidal, but I am a little stressed... maybe that has to do with it. But it's not anything like 'I should kill myself' or 'It'd be nice to be dead'; it's more of the metaphysical realization of entropy and our inevitable march towards biological termination. Maybe I need to get out more.
